Why Post-Storm Washing Is Critical in NH
New Hampshire roads are treated aggressively during and after winter storms โ often with a combination of road salt, sand, and liquid brine pre-treatment. Your vehicle picks up all of it during a single drive on a treated road.
Salt dissolved in melting snow creates an electrolyte solution that actively corrodes metal on contact. It accumulates in every crevice of your undercarriage โ frame rails, wheel wells, exhaust hangers, brake line brackets โ and keeps reacting with the metal as long as it stays wet.
Washing within 24โ48 hours removes the salt before it has time to cause significant damage. Waiting a week means a week of continuous corrosion.
What to Focus On After a Storm
Post-storm washing has a different priority order than a regular maintenance wash. Here is what matters most:
- Underbody first โ the frame, wheel wells, and undercarriage carry the most salt and are most vulnerable to corrosion. Our touchless automatic bay includes an underbody blast that flushes salt from below the vehicle.
- Wheel wells โ packed snow and slush carry concentrated salt directly into the wheel well liners where it melts slowly and sits against metal
- Lower body panels โ rocker panels, lower doors, and rear bumper fascia all accumulate heavy salt spray
- Full exterior rinse โ roof, hood, trunk, and upper panels collect salt spray from other vehicles passing on the highway
Pro tip: If the storm is ongoing and roads are still being treated, wait until 24 hours after the last treatment application before washing โ otherwise you'll drive home on treated roads and undo the wash immediately. Check road conditions before you go.
Self-Serve or Automatic โ Which Is Better After a Storm?
Both work well for post-storm washing โ your choice depends on how much salt and grime accumulated:
- Touchless automatic bay โ best for regular post-storm maintenance. The underbody blast is the key feature. Membership holders can wash as often as needed for one flat monthly rate.
- Self-serve bay โ best when significant mud, slush, or packed snow is stuck in wheel wells. The high-pressure wand lets you direct water exactly where you need it, including deep into wheel well pockets.
Many Village customers do both โ use the self-serve wand to knock heavy slush out of wheel wells first, then run through the touchless automatic bay for a thorough full-vehicle treatment.
